Make the Road States

We are a national organization working alongside our local Make the Roads building

The power of immigrant and working-class communities of color to achieve dignity and justice. Currently composed of five organizations—Make the Road Connecticut, Make the Road Nevada, Make the Road New Jersey, Make the Road New York and Make the Road Pennsylvania—Make the Road States is an organizing powerhouse that has won key campaigns for immigrant and working-class communities of color.

Make the Road States provides national campaign leadership and communications and infrastructure support to elevate the voices of our largely immigrant and working-class members nationally.

About US

What We Do

Prepare our response to threats posed by the incoming Trump administration, which has promised indiscriminate mass deportations, an end to birthright citizenship, rolling back the rights of trans youth, and attacks on our democratic process.

We Win
Campaigns

We win by using a sophisticated mix of strategies including direct action, mass mobilization, public education, civic engagement, litigation traditional and digital communications, as well as by building and leveraging relationships with coalition partners, policy experts, and allies.

We Create
Community

We build long-term, broad-based power, creating a community where all are welcome and important. Our organizations are places where everyone can contribute. We build vibrant centers in our members’ neighborhoods, where they feel seen, heard, and supported. The centers are spaces for building relationships and solidarity, through dialog about our work, sharing food, culture, and more.

We Provide
Movement Services

Some of our organizations provide legal and survival services in addition to our organizing work. Residents of our communities face tremendous obstacles to their collective as well as individual success and, at times, survival. For this reason, we often decide to offer high-quality legal, educational, health, and other services in support of and to complement our organizing work.

We Build
Political Power

Civic Engagement is key to our work. We mobilize voters on the issues that impact their lives. Our sister 501(c)(4) organization Make the Road Action mobilizes millions of voters to build political power rooted in working-class Latinx communities, promote policy solutions that improve the lives of all working-class and low-income people, and strengthen the movement for justice.

We Lift Up Voices

At the Make the Road family of organizations, individuals directly impacted by injustice lead the fight against it. Our members are strategists, decision-makers, facilitators, media spokespeople, and more. We invest significant time and resources in member leadership development through regular training, leadership schools, and committees so that members have the opportunity to learn organizing skills, develop political analysis, and participate in decision-making.
